Heron (Yellow-Crowned Heron) Illustrated by John James Audubon from The Birds of America. The Birds of America is a book by naturalist and painter John James Audubon, containing illustrations of a wide variety of birds of the United States. It was first published as a series in sections between 1827 and 1838, in Edinburgh and London. The work consists of 435 hand-coloured, life-size prints, made from engraved plates. Art historians describe the quality of Audubon's work as being of high and printed with "artistic finesse." "Birds of America is most significant for its sheer beauty. It's a masterpiece of illustration. Aside from being famous in the rare book, world, Birds of America has also immense historical and ornithological importance. Some of the birds John James Audubon painted are extinct and he also discovered new species." - Richard Daves Only 120 complete sets of Birds of America are believed to exist today. The last full edition of the Birds of America, which went up for auction in 2010, sold for $8.5M, breaking the world record for a single book.
